The Beginning of My Journey From Supersize to Maximize
An Intro of Sorts "Yes; that's right. One #4, supersized, with a large soda; a #2, supersized, with a large soda; and two 'Happy Meals' with chicken nuggets, fries, one sweet tea, and a milk. *Pause.* Yes; that's all." This was a regular exchange for our family over the last 6+ years. We were constantly eating on the go, at our convenience, and with little regard as to "what" we were actually putting into our bodies.
Over the years, and with several additions to our growing family, I watched the weight slowly pile on. For awhile, it seemed as though we were living the way we "should?" live, as if we were typical. Maybe we were at least that much: typical. But I read two books last year from the "Eat This, Not That" series and was AMAZED at what I learned. That was the beginning of a change in our lives.
The Beginning of Change After reading and re-reading the "Eat This, Not That" books, I was extremely excited to share my new found knowledge with my husband. He agreed that we needed to make changes and we started with an overhaul of our frig and pantry. I used the books as my guide as to what was healthy and what needed to just GO. We gave all of our unhealthy foods away and went on a "Shopping Mission". When we returned home we had ample supplies of what we deemed healthy, and were quite pleased with ourselves. ... However, even with the subtraction of the unhealthy and addition of healthy, not much was changing. It was, though, a beginning.
Hatching, Counting, & Battling In July of last year, I hatched (gave birth to) our youngest child: our sweet Olivia. When I came home from the hospital I was "determined" to shed not only my pregnancy weight, but everything else (the extra weight and worries) that was weighing me down. My game plan was to use CalorieCount.com to accomplish this task, in regard to weight, and to work more on my relationship with Christ, in regard to worries. I had some success, but after losing 23 lbs, I plateaued. Counting calories had worked to an extent, but I wasn't feeling healthy and the weight wasn't shedding. My weight wasn't the only thing lacking success... I found myself in a deep depression ("The Baby Blues"). This battle felt like too much, but in the end Christ prevailed, and I'm blessed to say that I'm currently not battling depression. (You can look under the Faith Ninja - Taboo Christianity tab to see my article on depression. *Disclaimer: Some views have changed.*)
Cliche`, Touche` We're going to fast forward at this point and get to the here and now. It's a new year, and for many people it means a new them. I hate to be a part of another cliche`, but I find myself in that same group. The timing isn't really relevant to me. I needed to make changes in my life regardless of it being a new year. (Touche`.) My dear friend, Kel, had been inviting me to the Maximized Living Makeovers that were held throughout last year. These makeovers are monthly events and on several occassions I had committed to go and later had to cancel for various reasons. While sitting up late one night this January, I decided to look at Dr Mike's (our Chiropractor) website and see when he was offering another makeover. I found it, reserved my spot, and going to that event has Changed. My. Life.
Maximize ME Going to a Maximized Living Makeover isn't like what most may think once hearing about it. There are no new hairstyles, no make-up or cosmetics, and no new outfits involved. You go into the office and sit with a group of likeminded folks. Individually, we are each on our own journeys to health. Collectively, we are a group that has been given such profound knowledge that we could impact the world in a huge, positive way. At this makeover (which lasted about two hours) we were given stats, graphs, and information to help us understand where we were currently in regard to health and where we are meant to be. Dr Mike taught us the Five Essentials to Maximized Living. I'm actively applying these essentials to my life and that of my family.
Supersize me? No. Maximize ME.
* It's my hope that you will join me on this journey and maximize yourself. I'll be posting a new section entitled "Applying the Five" under the Maximize ME tab. In this section I'll share with you a condensed version of the Five Essentials for Maximized Living and how I'm applying them to my life. Links to websites and books associated with Maximized Living will also be in this section. *
